Plant responses to browsing can affect root and shoot morphology, which is important to subsequent herbivory, nutrient acquisition and competition. This paper examines the above- and below-ground responses of three browse species, with different growth strategies, to simulated browsing damage at different times of year. Saplings were grown in pots in sand culture to enable whole sapling analysis. At winter dormancy or budburst, 50% of previous year's shoots (and associated leaves/buds) were clipped. Subsequent sapling growth and morphology was compared with that of unclipped control saplings. Treatment differences in growth parameters of each species were observed, including changes in branching patterns, shoot lengths, diameters and ratios, leaf sizes and end-of-season bud numbers. Some responses were damage-induced per se; others differed according to timing of damage. Compensatory growth by the two deciduous species ( Betula pendula , Sorbus aucuparia ) resulted in few biomass differences by the end of the year of damage as compared to controls, but both above- and below-ground growth of clipped Pinus sylvestris was poor, particularly those damaged at budburst, giving strong differences between control, dormant, and budburst clipped saplings.  相似文献

Neonatal transection results in a marked reduction of the number of trigeminal (V) ganglion cells that contribute axons to the regenerate infraorbital nerve (ION; Jacquin and Rhoades, 1985; Chiaia et al., 1987). Such lesions also produce a profound deafferentation of the V brain stem complex that appears to spare the innervation of layers I and II of subnucleus caudalis (SpC) by substance-P-positive (SP-positive) primary afferents (Jacquin and Rhoades, 1985; Rhoades et al., 1988). In the present study, we combined retrograde tracing with immunocytochemistry to determine whether neonatal transection of the ION alters the percentage of SP-positive V ganglion cells that contribute axons to this V branch upon regeneration. In V ganglia ipsilateral to the intact ION (n = 8), 11.6% +/- 3.2% of the cells labeled after application of true blue (TB) to the ION were also SP-positive. In ganglia ipsilateral to the neonatally damaged nerve (n = 8), 18.6% +/- 4.7% of the cells labeled after application of TB to the regenerate ION were also SP-positive (p less than 0.001). We also compared the SP content of intact ganglia (n = 10) with that of ganglia ipsilateral to the damaged nerve (n = 10) by means of radioimmunoassay. The normal V ganglia contained (mean +/- SD) 3496 +/- 774 pg SP/mg protein. The value for the ganglia ipsilateral to the damaged nerve was 5533 +/- 1746 pg SP/mg protein (p less than 0.01). There was no significant difference between SP levels on the control and partially deafferented sides of the brain stem in neonatally nerve-damaged adult rats. In one additional experiment, we injected TB into both vibrissa pads of seven rats on the day of birth prior to transection of the ION. After an 8-hr delay, the nerve on one side was then cut and allowed to regenerate, and both V ganglia were then processed for immunocytochemistry. On the nerve-damage side, 25.8% of the TB-labeled cells were SP-positive. The value for the intact side was 12.0% (p less than 0.000001). This result demonstrated that the lesion-induced change in the percentage of SP-positive ION cells was not the result of either late-growing axons from SP-positive ganglion cells that may have been missed by our nerve cuts or collateral sprouting into the regenerate ION by undamaged SP-positive ganglion cells.  相似文献

Aphidicolin and 17 derivatives that have been structurally modified in the A- and D-rings were assessed for their ability to inhibit DNA polymerase alpha. No derivative surpassed the activity of aphidicolin; derivatives with structural alterations in the A-ring exhibited significantly greater loss of activity relative to derivatives with structural alterations in the D-ring. The conclusions of these studies indicate a critical role for the C-18 function in the interaction of aphidicolin with polymerase alpha. Molecular modelling studies could not identify structural features of the aphidicolin-dCTP "overlap" that is unique to dCTP, relative to the remaining dNTPs, and that is consistent with the extant structure-activity data.  相似文献

We have identified the regulatory sequences required for the periodic expression of the Drosophila pair rule gene even skipped (eve). We find that the gradually changing pattern of periodic eve expression during early embryogenesis is directed by two distinct regulatory programs. Initially, eve expression in individual stripes is established by different regulatory elements, each of which responds to nonperiodic spatial cues provided, at least in part, by the gap genes. Later, coordinate expression of eve in all seven stripes is directed by a single regulatory region that responds to periodic cues provided by primary pair rule genes, including eve itself. As a consequence of this two-step regulatory program, eve functions both in the establishment of the periodic pattern of gene expression and in the subsequent specification of parasegmental boundaries.  相似文献

Red cells of newborn calves contain 105–110 mmole K+ and 1–5 mmole Na+ per liter of cells. As the animals age the K+ content decreases to a value of 25–30 mmole/liter of cells after about 60 days. At approximately the same time, the sodium content reaches a value of 60–70 mmole/liter. The time required for half change (t½) is 35–37 days for both Na+ and K+. The activity of (Na + K)-adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) and the influx of K42 and Rb86 into the red cells are high at birth and are reduced to 5 and 15% of their original values, respectively, in mature animals. t½ for both is of the order of 30–35 days. The membrane Mg-ATPase activity is also high at birth and is reduced with a t½ of 28–32 days to a final value of about 20% of its activity at birth. Separation of red cells according to their age showed that, in animals at the age of transition, newly formed red cells contain a higher K/Na ratio and a higher active transport capacity than older red cells of the same animal. It is suggested that the changes observed are a reflection of the average age of the red cell population as the animal grows.  相似文献

The effect of oxygen tension above atmospheric pO2 on the development of respiratory capacity in potato disks has been examined. Raising the oxygen tension of the aqueous environment to 40% during the aging of 2.0 mm or 3.0 mm thick disks at 25° progressively increased the respiration rate of the tissue as shown by subsequent assay in 100% oxygen. Disks 3.0 mm thick showed a greater response to increased pO2 than did 2.0 mm disks. A comparison of center 1.0 mm sections excised from 3.0 mm disks after aging, showed that the respiration rate of internal tissue from disks aged in high pO2 was approximately 40% greater than such tissue aged with atmospheric pO2. The characteristic inverse relationship between respiration rate and thickness in aged disks can be modified from a concave-downwards curve to a convex-downwards curve by pretreating the tissue with increased pO2, thus indicating that raising the pO2 during aging can increase the thickness threshold at which the transition from tissue manifesting the respiratory characteristics of thin disks to that manifesting the characteristics of thick disks, occurs. Similarly increased pO2 during aging can modify the hyperbolic relationship obtaining between pretreatment temperature in the range 10° to 25° and respiratory capacity of aged 3.0 mm disks, to approximate to the linear relationship observed with 0.75 mm disks. It is concluded that the development of respiratory capacity in disks between 0.75 mm and 3.0 mm thick is restricted by oxygen dificiency and that the characteristic inverse relationship between respiration rate and thickness in aged disks is largely attributable to this factor, the influence of which is discernible both on the development of respiratory capacity and on its subsequent assay.  相似文献

Previous workers have shown that some strains ofAspergillus nidulans produce penicillin-like substances. In the present studies, shake-flask cultures of 101 wild-type strains ofA. nidulans, representatives of 18 different heterokaryon-compatible groups, were examined and filtrates of most found to inhibit the growth of a strain ofBacillus subtilis sensitive to penicillin, although members of two of these groups had no detectable antibiotic activity. Five strains with antibacterial properties were chosen for detailed investigation as well as two genetically labelled derivatives obtained from one of these after ultraviolet light treatments; one derivative had a similar antibiotic yield to its original wild-type parent but the other was selected as having increased antibiotic yield. The antibiotic produced by these seven strains was by all tested criteria, including chromatographic and electrophoretic behaviour, indistinguishable from penicillin. A heterokaryon test between the two mutants indicated that antibiotic productivity was under nuclear control.  相似文献

A worldwide survey of babirusa skulls curated in museum and private collections located 431 that were from adult males and had retained at least one maxillary canine tooth. Eighty-three of these skulls were identified as exhibiting aberrant maxillary canine tooth growth. Twenty-four of the skulls represented babirusa from Buru and the Sula Islands, and forty-five skulls represented babirusa from Sulawesi and the Togian Islands. The remaining series of fourteen babirusa skulls originally came from zoo animals. Fifteen skulls showed anomalous alveolar and tooth rotation in a median plane. Twenty-nine skulls had maxillary canine teeth that did not grow symmetrically towards the median plane of the cranium. Fourteen skulls showed evidence that the tips of one or both maxillary canine teeth had eroded the nasal bones. Twenty-one skulls had maxillary canine teeth that had eroded the frontal bones. The teeth of two skulls had eroded a parietal bone. One skull had two maxillary canines arising from an adjacent pair of alveoli on the left side of the cranium. Three skulls exhibited alveoli with no formed maxillary canine teeth in them. Analysis suggested that approximately 12% of the adult male babirusa in the wild experience erosion of the cranial bony tissues as a result of maxillary canine tooth growth. There was no skeletal evidence that maxillary canine teeth penetrate the eye.  相似文献

The growth of the maxillary canine teeth of the babirusa (genus Babyrousa) was studied on a sample of 149 adult male babirusa skulls from twenty-two international museum and private collections. Skulls from Buru, Sulawesi and the Togian Islands were represented. The continuous growth process was summarised into five stages (‘A’–‘E’) according to the position of the tip of the tooth over the bones of the skull. The supracutaneous portion of the tooth grew in a curve-linear fashion dorso-caudally, and was orientated such that the tips grew towards the midline of the cranium. The teeth of Sulawesi and Togian babirusa grew more dorsally over the nasal and frontal bones. Measurements were made on a subset of 45 teeth from Sulawesi babirusa skulls. The subcutaneous portion of the maxillary canine tooth (n = 22) increased in size from 37.3 mm (95% CI: 29.9–44.4 mm) in growth stage ‘B’ to 54.3 mm (49.4–59.2 mm) in growth stage ‘E’ as the erupted portion of the tooth (n = 19) lengthened from 81.3 mm (43.8–118.9 mm) in growth stage ‘A’ to 215.3 mm (177.8–252.9 mm) in growth stage ‘E’. The apical end of the tooth was open and thin-walled. The lumen of the tooth was filled with a cone of well vascularised dental pulp that extended almost to the tip of the tooth. The angle of curvature of the tooth within the alveolus (n = 22) decreased from 19.8 (17.3–22.3) degrees in growth stage ‘B’ to 7.4 (5.7–9.0) degrees in growth stage ‘E’. The corresponding supracutaneous angle of curvature (n = 25) reduced from 36.8 (33.6–40.1) degrees in growth stage ‘A’ to 10.7 (8.6–12.8) degrees in growth stage ‘E’.  相似文献
